- Join Friends of the FGS

Participate!

FGS is interested in recruiting and retaining active gardeners who are also active in the Garden Society.

Member participation is critical to the success of FGS's mission "to encourage the interest and cooperation of all gardeners in the Richard D. Parker Memorial Victory Gardens, to represent FGS in all dealings with third parties involving the gardens, to promote gardening techniques and principles to gardeners and the public, and to act as stewards of the parkland on which it operates."

We offer members and friends many ways to take part in events and programming, as well as in the governance of the organization.

Sign up for
Community Participation Days

Vital to the ongoing maintenance of the parkland of which we have stewardship, with tasks as varied as repairs of the irrigation system, turning compost, building gates and mending fences, our Community Participation Days are also great opportunities to catch up with old friends and make new ones, share knowledge, insights and experience. Coffee and doughnuts from Mike's on Mission Hill are on us, and grab a drink and free apps with us at the Lansdowne afterwards! Open to all, members and friends alike!

Join the Maintenance & Repair Brigade

The Few, The Proud. Prove your mettle. Join this scrappy crew that works with the Maintenance & Repair Committee to identify critical maintenance and repair issues in the Victory Gardens and get 'em fixed.

Become an Area Director

Our "Ambassadors of Welcome" who help direct other members in their row to FGS resources, ADs also help the VP of the Park assign new gardeners plots, and keep the board informed via their Section Coordinator as to developments in their corner of the Victory Gardens.

With stewardship of seven acres of gardens and parkland, we can use as much help from our ADs as possible, but the job itself is mostly about making friends among your neighbors and pointing them in the right direction when they're seeking guidance.

This is a great role for second-year gardeners and we encourage them to get involved!

Join a Committee

If there are areas of special interest to you, we encourage you to inquire about committees you might serve on. Committees can be as formal or informal as their members deem necessary, so long as they are able to present their proposals to the Executive Board when asked to do so.

Committee membership is a great way to network with fellow gardeners from diverse professions and backgrounds, to share knowledge, identify opportunities and address challenges, brainstorm and implement ideas, and have a real, positive impact in the community.

Here are some of the committees currently forming for 2012:

EVENTS & PROGRAMMING

We're planning programming throughout the growing season. Ideas being considered include "Bocce in the Meadow" and two "Open Garden" events, regular coffee klatches, ongoing programming in the Teaching Garden, and outreach in the Accessible Garden.

What would you like to do, see, and be a part of this year? The sky's the limit!

MAINTENANCE & REPAIRS

Help identify critical maintenance and repair issues in the Victory Gardens, and work with the Maintenance & repair Brigade to address them.

PARK STEWARDS

The Fenway Garden Society is not only responsible for the maintenance and governance of the Victory Gardens, but is an active partner in the upkeep of the seven-acre public park which we're privileged to garden in.

Members of the Park Stewards Committee work with our partners at Parks, DCR, and the Emerald Necklace Conservancy (among many others) to identify areas for improvement in our park and to coordinate maintenance, tree-plantings, parkwide clean-ups, and special projects like new signage, path maintenance and border landscape design.

This is an excellent committee for members with a personal or professional interest in Parks, urban design and planning, or conservation and recreation who may wish to network in the field. Members may also serve on the Park Overseers Committee, which has oversight of the entire Emerald Necklace Conservancy.

STANDING COMMITTEES

Nominating Committee: Responsible for recruiting each year's slate of elective officers.

Guidelines and Regs: Reviews Guidelines and Regulations once a year and suggests changes to be voted on at the Annual Meeting in December.

Constitution & Bylaws: Reviews FGS Bylaws once a year and suggests changes to be voted on at the Annual Meeting in December.

Auditing Committee: We urge members with bookkeeping or accounting experience to join this committee, which reviews the Treasurer's work and presents a report at the General Meeting in December.

(For complete descriptions of standing committees, please refer to FGS bylaws.)

Note that none of these are overwhelming time commitments, but they do require a commitment to the larger community of FGS. We are always seeking gardeners who demonstrate that commitment.
